After years and years of my preaching BACKUP YOUR DATA BACK. UP. YOUR. DATA.!!!! I very nearly lost a lot of data... sigh...
I keep a great deal of my video and larger files on an external drive to keep the main system freed up and so on. That also happens to be my back up drive. Where I DO back things up. But as the lovely and talented Mr Patrick Norton loves to state: a single copy is not a back up, its the original!
Thankfully I was able to use a powerful bit of software with a bit of help from a good friend in MI, and rebuilt the library key's for that drive and recovered everything. If you have a MAC and you don't have it, get it: Disk Warrior.
And so now I am working to determine a good offsite backup company to use. I was going to use Carbonite.com but they don't support the PPC Mac's.. So now I am looking at Mozy.com. It seems promising, but there seems to be some odd delay between when I do my actual back up and its showing as having been completed via my web account view.
I am hoping that its just a processing latency thing. If so - then I have found a home for my info, off site and safely out of reach in case of disaster, theft, device failure, etc.
So as we all make an ever grander foray into the world of cloud computing and living in that cloud, I am joining the ranks and beefing up my "real deal back ups" into REAL backups and not just separate but equal.
Once I determine which or what is going to work best for me - trust me I will espouse them on here.
One of the worst feelings I know is the feeling of having just lost huge swaths of data from your life. Information you have worked on, built, and rely on. Its a very humbling and vulnerable feeling.
There are certainly more life and death moments in life out there, but this is right up there on the list of frustrating moments in life on the scale just below the life/death one.
So - FIND AN OFF SITE OPTION, EITHER MAKE DVD'S AND PUT THEM IN A SAFE DEPOSIT BOX, COPY TO AN EXTERNAL DRIVE AND SHIP IT TO AUNT SALLY ON THE OPPOSITE COAST, OR FIND AN ONLINE SERVICE. BUT BACK IT UP FOLKS! BACK! IT! UP!
